The structure of the protein phosphatase 2A PR65/A subunit reveals the conformation of its 15 tandemly arranged HEAT motifs
-
Groves MR, Hanlon N, Turowski P, Hemmings BA, Barford D: The structure of the protein phosphatase 2A PR65/A subunit reveals the conformation of its 15 tandemly arranged HEAT motifs. Cell 1998, 96:99-110. This paper reveals the conformation of a HEAT-motif-containing protein, the position of conserved hydrophobia residues that are likely to form the protein - protein interaction surface and the structural consequences of point mutations in the forms of the PR65/A subunit that are associated with lung and colon tumours. Conformational flexibility within the molecule is described.

Three-dimensional structure of the armadillo repeat region of β-catenin
-
Huber AH, Nelson JW, Weis WI: Three-dimensional structure of the armadillo repeat region of β-catenin. Cell 1997, 90:871-882. The authors describe the conformation of the armadillo motifs of β-catenin, revealing a striking, right-handed superhelix conformation featuring a surface groove that is proposed to be the site of protein - protein interactions. Conformational flexibility is described.

Crystallographic analysis of the recognition of a nuclear localisation signal by the nuclear import factor karyopherin α
-
Conti E, Uy M, Leighton L, Blobel G, Kuriyan J: Crystallographic analysis of the recognition of a nuclear localisation signal by the nuclear import factor karyopherin α. Cell 1998, 94:193-204. This paper describes how the nuclear localisation signal (NLS) peptide is bound in an extended conformation to the surface groove of importin α formed from the stack of 10 armadillo motifs. Protein - peptide interactions utilise conserved asparagine and tryptophan residues on adjacent armadillo repeats. Compare this paper to [20••], which describes differences between the conformation of the NLS bound to the ankyrin repeats of IκBα and the armadillo motifs of importin α.

The structure of the tetratricopeptide repeats of protein phosphatase 5: Implications for TPR-mediated protein-protein interactions
-
Das AK, Cohen PTW, Barford D: The structure of the tetratricopeptide repeats of protein phosphatase 5: Implications for TPR-mediated protein-protein interactions. EMBO J 1998, 17:1192-1199. The structure of the three tetratricopeptide repeat motifs in protein phosphatase 5 are revealed. The three motifs stack together, forming a right-handed superhelix that creates an amphipathic groove. Structural similarities to 14-3-3 proteins are discussed.
