Contrary to the common assumption that polystyrene-(polyethylene oxide) diblock copolymers form a coherent film when spread on water, these results clearly show that such polymers self assemble into discrete aggregates which form highly regular patterns.

Thin films of triblock copolymers are found to phase separate with the eventual morphology dependent on the rate of solvent evaporation. Thermal annealing results also indicate that the transition from one morphology to another has a large activation energy barrier even if the initial morphology is not the equilibrium state.

    • Jaschke M, Butt HJ, Gaub HE, Manne S: Surfactant aggregates at a metal surface. Langmuir 1997, 10:1381-1384. This is one of a series of papers which investigates the self assembly of surfactant molecules onto solid substrates. The aggregate structures can be different from those in bulk solution owing to the effect of the substrate. The morphology obtained on a gold surface is striped and the orientation is controlled by monoatomic steps on the gold surface or by the gold lattice itself, depending on the surfactant counterion.
