L. Sung, A. Karim, J. F. Douglas, and C. C. Han, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 4368 (1996). Suppression of surface-directed spinodal decomposition in blend films occurs for thicknesses less than 2000 A. For lateral phase separation to occur in ultrathin films, it is also necessary for one of the blend components to enrich both the polymer-solid and the polymerair interface ("symmetric film"). The critical temperature and composition can also shift in ultrathin films. The present studies were performed at temperatures well within the one- and two-phase regions. Shifts in the phase boundary do not affect the qualitative aspects of our study.

For fluid films heated from below, pattern formation arises from the surface tension variation. This phenomenon is similar to surface patterning in phase-separating blends, although the physical origin of the surface tension variations is different.
