Efficient discrimination of temporal patterns by motion-sensitive neurons in primate visual cortex
-
The authors used single-unit recordings from area MT of the visual cortex of awake behaviourally trained monkeys to investigate to which extent modulations of the firing rate of cortical neurons reflect the temporal structure of stimuli. They obtain evidence that the temporal structure of stimuli is preserved with a precision in the millisecond range in the neuronal responses, indicating that temporal signatures can be conveyed with high precision over several synaptic stages in cortical networks

The variable discharge of cortical neurons: Implications for connectivity, computation, and information coding
-
This comprehensive study of a biologically inspired cortical network addresses the important issue of how precise temporal information can be transmitted in networks characterised by a high degree of convergence, low synaptic efficacy, long integration time constants and firing patterns of individual neurons that approximate a Poisson distribution. The authors demonstrate that precise timing information can be conveyed with population coding requiring synchronised rate fluctuations in parallel channels

Neural dynamics in a model of the thalamocortical system. II. The role of neural synchrony tested through perturbations of spike timing
-
In a large-scale simulation of the early stages of the visual system, the authors describe a tendency of the network to engage in oscillatory activity in the gamma-frequency range as a naturally emerging phenomenon. By manipulating the degree of synchrony, they provide compelling evidence that neurons with conventional membrane properties are sensitive to changes in the synchrony of their inputs

Input synchrony and the irregular firing of cortical neurons
-
Combining electrophysiological recordings in cultured tissue with computer simulations, the authors measure input-output functions in cortical neurons as a function of the temporal characteristics of converging synaptic inputs. The paper addresses the puzzling question of why cortical cells discharge regularly although they are believed to integrate with long time constants over a large number of relatively inefficient EPSPs whose interval distribution follows a Poisson distribution. The puzzle is resolved by the demonstration that cortical neurons discharge preferentially in response to synchronously arriving EPSPs

Synchronization of oscillatory responses in visual cortex correlates with perception in interocular rivalry
-
The authors searched in the primary visual cortex of alert cats for neuronal correlates of binocular rivalry, applying multielectrode recordings and evaluating not only response amplitudes but also the degree of synchrony among simultaneously recorded responses. Neurons that win in interocular competition and convey the signals that are actually perceived increase the synchronisation of their responses, whereas neurons that lose in competition and respond to stimuli that are not consciously perceived reduce the synchrony of their responses. No such perception-related modulations were observed for the discharge rate of neurons

Impaired odour discrimination on desynchronization of odour-encoding neural assemblies
-
By antagonising GABAergic inhibition in the olfactory system of the honeybee, the authors succeed in disrupting the synchronisation of discharges in parallel olfactory pathways without interfering with the rate modulation of the discharge patterns and demonstrate that this disruption impedes the honeybees' ability to discriminate among composite odours. Because the honeybees are still able to recognise simple, noncomposite odours, the study provides evidence that information about the composition of odours is contained in the precise temporal relations among the discharges in parallel channels

Spike synchronization and rate modulation differentially involved in motor cortical function
-
The authors supply a new statistical method for detecting episodes of enhanced synchronous firing in multielectrode recording experiments from monkey motor cortex. Animals were trained to withhold a goal-directed movement until the appearance of a go signal that was delivered randomly within four predictable time intervals. Incidences of enhanced synchronous firing coincided with intervals where go signals are expected to occur, the degree of synchronisation reflecting the predictable probability of the go signal

Riehle A., Grün S., Diesmann M., Aertsen A. Spike synchronization and rate modulation differentially involved in motor cortical function. Science. 278:1997;1950-1953. The authors supply a new statistical method for detecting episodes of enhanced synchronous firing in multielectrode recording experiments from monkey motor cortex. Animals were trained to withhold a goal-directed movement until the appearance of a go signal that was delivered randomly within four predictable time intervals. Incidences of enhanced synchronous firing coincided with intervals where go signals are expected to occur, the degree of synchronisation reflecting the predictable probability of the go signal.

Induced-band activity during the delay of a visual short-term memory task in humans

Applying a new analytical tool based on wavelets, the authors were able to extract from single-trial analysis of EEG signals transient episodes of synchronised gamma-activity and to demonstrate that gamma-oscillations take place during the performance of a visual short-term memory task in cortical areas known to be involved in the task and with a time course compatible with stimulus decoding, retention and recognition

Perception's shadow: Long-distance gamma band synchronization of human brain activity
-
Using a new analytical tool, the authors have succeeded in detecting not only brief bursts of gamma-activity in single-trial EEG recordings in humans but also the phase relations between this activity across different cortical areas. The study provides the first evidence in human subjects that the identification of a figure, in this case a face, is not only associated with a local increase of gamma-activity over the involved cortical areas but also with precise phase locking of local oscillatory activity across large cortical distances, and that the synchronisation patterns are modified in a task-specific manner

Coherence of gamma-band EEG activity as a basis for associative learning
-
The authors investigate the coherence of oscillatory activity with high-density EEG recordings from human subjects that have been exposed to a classical conditioning paradigm establishing a relation between a visual and a tactile stimulus. They find a significant increase of coherence in a narrow frequency band centred around 40 Hz between visual cortex and the representation area of the hand having received the tactile stimulus. This coherence breaks down upon extinction, proving its close relation to the established association

Visuomotor integration is associated with zero time-lag synchronization among cortical areas
-
This multielectrode recording study in awake cats trained to perform a visual discrimination task provides the first evidence of precise phase-locking across different cortical areas of neuronal activity that is modulated in the gamma-frequency range. The episodes of synchronisation with zero phase lag were restricted to trial periods during which the animals were attentive and engaged in executing the task

Visual synchrony affects binding and segmentation in perception
-
This psychophysical study addresses the issue of whether the brain interprets synchronised responses as perceptually related if the responses are made synchronous by synchronising the stimuli that evoke them. The results show that pattern elements that are presented in synchrony are grouped perceptually into a coherent figure but are perceived as segregated from pattern elements that are presented with the same frequency but phase-shifted

Visual features that vary together over time group together over space

Investigating perceptual grouping of a temporally modulated pattern, the authors investigate whether responses to simultaneously presented patterns are bound perceptually and segregated from elements appearing out of phase. The results indicate that human subjects use temporal relations among stimuli for perceptual grouping even if the temporal relations are not consciously perceived
