This article shows that the low or undetectable levels of slg expressed by B-CLL cells are due to point mutations, insertions, or deletions within the CD79b gene in sequences coding for transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains of the molecule. CD79b is also required for signal transduction and therefore provides an explanation for the loss of BC signaling, characteristic of this leukemia.

In an analysis of 560 patients with newly diagnosed untreated B-CLL, chromosomal abnormalities were found significantly more often in patients with atypical presentation (48%) than typical presentation (22%). Chromosome 17 abnormalities were significantly more frequent in atypical CLL, whereas trisomy 12 was present in both typical and atypical B-CLL phoenotype.
