J Clin Invest 1998; 101:1726-1736 The approach of bone marrow transplantation was used to investigate the mechanism of hepatic remnant lipoprotein clearance by introducing extrahepatic apolipoprotein E into the circulation of mice deficient in expression of both apolipoprotein E and the LDLR. The results confirms the existence of the secretion capture mechanism in vivo and indicate that hepatic apolipoprotein E expression is required for remnant lipoprotein uptake in the absence of the LDLR.

Leukocyte low • density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) does not contribute to LDL clearance in vivo: bone marrow transplantation studies in the mouse J Lipid Res 1997; 38:391-400. In this study, reconstitution of LDLR ( -/-) mice with wild-type marrow and wild-type mice with LDLR ( -/-) marrow is shown to have no influence on plasma lipid and lipoprotein levels. The results indicate that leukocyte expression of the LDLR does not contribute significantly to plasma lipoprotein clearance.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 1997; 94:4647-4652. C57BL/6 mice reconstituted with apolipoprotein E null macrophages develop increased atherosclerosis in response to an atherogenic diet, although plasma lipid levels did not differ from values in transplanted controls. The results indicate an anti-atherogenic role for macrophage expression of apolipoprotein E in the artery wall.
