    • Observation of strange kinetics in protein folding
    • The first report of highly nonexponential (distributed) kinetics for a protein folding reaction on the submillisecond timescale. Folding from the cold-denatured state of two proteins, phosphoglycerate kinase and the V26G/F45W mutant of ubiquitin, was triggered by an IR laser pulse and monitored via picosecond time-resolved fluorescence. The results support theoretical predictions [8] of 'downhill folding scenarios' and provide new insight into the free energy surface encountered by the protein en route to the folded state.

    • The burst phase in ribonuclease A folding and solvent dependence of the unfolded state
    • The far-UV circular dichroism (CD) signal for fully disulfide-reduced ribonuclease A as a function of denaturant concentration coincides with the burst-phase CD signal measured within milliseconds of the refolding of the unmodified protein. As in previous work on cytochrome c [56], the results are interpreted in terms of a model involving nonspecific, solvent-induced chain condensation.

    • in press. An exponential fluorescence phase during the refolding of a 57-residue protein with an approximately 500 μs time constant accounts for the burst-phase changes seen in stopped-flow measurements [62]. Kinetic modeling supports the presence of an obligatory intermediate on the folding pathway of the B1 domain of protein G
