of outstanding interest. The evolution of theoretical views of folding mechanisms is reviewed, beginning from the seminal ideas of Levinthal and ending with current speculations regarding a new view based on funnel-like energy landscapes. It is argued that the folding pathway concept should be replaced by a more general picture in which proteins fold by trickling down this funnel.
