Aldehyde dehydrogenase genotypes in Japanese alcoholics
-
6 Higuchi S, Matsushita S, Imazeki H, Kinoshita T, Takagi S, Kono H. Aldehyde dehydrogenase genotypes in Japanese alcoholics. Lancet 1994; 343:741-742. This letter showed a steady year-on-year increase over the past 10 years in the number of Japanese alcoholics who manage to overcome their genetically determined aversion to alcoholism. It demonstrates the relationship between social pressures to drink, which are increasing in Japan, and the fact that even those least likely to succumb to alcoholism are responding to that pressure.
