Randomised trial of interferon alpha2b plus ribavirin for 48 weeks or for 24 weeks versus interferon alpha2b plus placebo for 48 weeks for treatment of chronic infection with hepatitis C virus. International Hepatitis Interventional Therapy Group. Lancet 1998; 352:1426-1432. These three pivotal studies [58-60] of the multicentre interferon/ribavirin after combination therapy trials in IFN-naive as well as patients relapsing after interferon document the outstanding benefit of the combination as compared to interferon alone and identify which subgroups respond better according to virological and host factors prior to therapy. This combination does become the standard of care for chronic hepatitis C. The duration should be one year except for patients with favourable prognostic factors including low virus load and non-1 genotype.
