Functional identification of a goldfish odorant receptor
-
This paper is exceptional in that it addresses the biochemical properties of the ligand-OR interaction. The authors isolated a goldfish OR gene based on its sensitivity to amino acids (natural odorants for fish) in a functional assay. The OR was expressed in a human cell line, and a direct interaction between the receptor protein and radiolabelled arginine was demonstrated. High-affinity binding was measured for arginine and for the related basic amino acid lysine, but other amino acids and related compounds did not bind the OR as well.

The complete family of genes encoding G proteins of Caenorhabditis elegans

Presents some of the first fruits of the C. elegans genome project. The authors found that a surprising number of distinct Gα subunits are expressed predominantly in chemosensory neurons. Different G proteins within an individual neuron may define separate signal transduction pathways. Interestingly, most of the chemosensory Gα genes have no insect or vertebrate homologues.

Natural variation in a neuropeptide Y receptor homolog modifies social behavior and food response in C. elegans
-
NPR-1, a seven-transmembrane-domain protein similar to a vertebrate neuropeptide receptor, is shown to be a determinant of feeding behavior. Strains of C. elegans in which animals remain solitary in the presence of food have a valine at position 215 of NPR-1, whereas animals of strains that aggregate in the presence of food have a phenylalanine in this position. NPR-1 variants may interact differently with the downstream signal transducing machinery.

An olfactory sensory map develops in the absence of normal projection neurons or GABAergic interneurons
-
Mouse genetics shows that projection patterns of ORNs do not depend on the presence of major classes of olfactory bulb neurons.

Axons of olfactory receptor cells of transsexually grafted antennae induce development of sexually dimorphic glomeruli in Manduca sexta
-
Axons from ORNs of a male antennal graft project to the antennal lobe of the female host, where they induce a male-specific glomerular complex. Conversely, a female antennal graft induces a female-specific glomerular structure in a male host. Builds upon the work described in [53].
