The role of transferrin-receptor variation in the host range of Trypanosoma brucei

A clever explanation for why African trypanosomes have twenty VSG expression sites instead of just one. The polymorphic transferrin receptor subunit genes present in different expression sites appear to encode receptors with different affinities for the variable transferrin proteins present in different mammalian host species. The authors propose that the polymorphic nature of expression site associated genes plays a role in host adaptation.
