Microbiology 1997, 143:303-311. This paper describes the development of a GFP variant with enhanced green fluorescence that is active in C. albicans. The reporter gene product can be monitored in single cells using flow cytometer. This study demonstrated for the first time that the alteration of a single CUG codon is not sufficient to obtain delectable fluorescence in vivo and that the normalization of codon pattern to that of highly expressed genes of C. albicans required to enhance fluorescence.

Mol Gen Genet 1998, 257:412-420. This paper describes the development of a GFP variant that has the single CUG codon altered according to C. albicans usage. The study demonstrates that addition customization as described by Cormack et al. [28••] may not be necessary for expression.
