    • Truncation of Kir6.2 produces ATP-sensitive K-channels in the absence of the sulphonylurea receptor
    • of outstanding interest. Demonstrates that partial deletion of the carboxy terminus of Kir6.2 enables its functional expression independently of SUR. By comparing the properties of this truncated Kir6.2 expressed with, or without, SUR1, it was shown that Kir6.2 forms an ATP-inhibitable pore while SUR1 endows sensitivity to sulphonylureas, K-channel openers and the potentiatory action of MgADP.

    • ATP channels by the Kir6.2 subunit
    • of special interest. Shows that mutation of N160 in transmembrane domain 2 (TM2) of Kir6.2 not only affects the rectification properties of the pore, but also enhances the open probability and simultaneously decreases ATP sensitivity. This result suggests that the mutations may alter the channel ATP sensitivity via their effects on gating rather than by affecting ATP binding.
