Six-month outcome of critically ill patients given glutamine supplemented parenteral nutrition
-
Griffiths RD, Jones C, Palmer TEA. Six-month outcome of critically ill patients given glutamine supplemented parenteral nutrition. Nutrition 1997; 13:295-302. This prospective, randomized, double-blind study evaluated the benefit of glutamine-supplemented versus isonitrogenous isoenergetic parenteral nutrition beyond the period of hospitalisation. It indicated a significant improvement in survival rate at 6 months together with a reduction in hospital costs per survivor.

Ornithine α-ketoglutarate metabolism after enteral administration in burn patients: Bolus compared with continuous infusion
-
Le Bricon T, Coudray-Lucas C, Lioret N, Lim SK, Plassart F, Schlegel L, et al. Ornithine α-ketoglutarate metabolism after enteral administration in burn patients: bolus compared with continuous infusion. Am J Clin Nutr 1997; 65:512-518. This prospective randomized controlled trial of the supplementation of enteral diet with ornithine α-ketoglutarate compared with an isonitrogenous control in burns patients indicates that bolus OKG administration promotes the synthesis of glutamine, arginine and proline thus explaining the beneficial clinical effects.
