    • Eaton KA, Suerbaum S, Josenhans C, Krakowka S: Colonization of gnotobiotic piglets by Helicobacter pylori deficient in two flagellin genes. Infect Immun 1997, 65:3462-3464. This work decribes the use of genetically manipulated strains of H. pylori in the gnotobiotic piglet animal model. The authors conclude that motility is a prerequisite for establishment of the infection.

    • Optimized BlaM-transposon shuttle mutagenesis of Helicobacter pylori allows the identification of novel genetic loci involved in bacterial virulence
    • Odenbreit S, Till M, Haas R: Optimized BlaM-transposon shuttle mutagenesis of Helicobacter pylori allows the identification of novel genetic loci involved in bacterial virulence. Mol Microbiol 1996, 20:361-373. This paper, along with Bina et al. 1997 [46•], described the identification of genes involved in virulence after fusions with a reporter. The work of Odenbreit et al. 1996 [45••] was performed in two steps: transposition in E. coli and insertional mutagenesis in Helicobacter, whilst the work of Bina et al. 1997 [46•] uses a Helicobacter pylori DNA library propagated in E. coli and combined in an in vitro assay.
