Biochem Biophys Res Commun 1997, 238:420-424. This study provides a better understanding of the alcohol metabolizing enzymes present in human HSCs. This study as well as papers by Yang and Cedarbaum (Alcoholism: Clin Exp Res 1997, 21:340-347 and Arch Biochem Biophys 1997, 341:25-33) describe further the usefulness of the Hep G2 cell line (MVh2E1-9), which Dr. Cederbaum and his colleagues have successfully transfected to stably express CYP2E1. Through lipid peroxidation, apoptosis was induced. These studies and others by this group clearly indicate that the MVh2E1-9 cell line is a powerful tool to study the significance of CYP2E1 in producing liver injury when exposed to a variety of agents including ethanol.
