    • Kerr JFR, Wyllie AH, Currie AR: Apoptosis: a basic biological •• phenomenon with widespread ranging implications in tissue kinetics. Br J Cancer 1972, 26:239-257. This is the classic paper that originally brought the concept of apoptosis to the world's attention. Although more of historical interest, it is well worth examining, if only to appreciate how much of the foundation of apoptosis was formulated in this first paper. The morphological differences between apoptosis and necrosis are well formulated.

    • Ellis HM, Horvitz HR: Genetic control of programmed cell death in the •• nematode C. elegans. Cell 1986, 44:817-829. This was the first genetic description of cell death. Until publication of this paper, it was felt that apoptosis might be largely environmentally induced. This opened up an entirely new field, suggesting that genes might induce cell death in a programmed fashion.
