[42]), the groups of Ercolani and Mencarelli in Rome have managed to isolate and characterize the tricationic intermediate - as its tris(hexafluorophosphate) salt-proposed in the template-directed reaction scheme for the formation of the [2]catenanes described in Figure 7.
