Mice lacking γδ T cells, but not αβ-T-cell-deficient animals, showed decreased proliferation of intestinal epithelial stem cells, decreased expression of MHC class II molecules, and abnormal epithelial differentiation in the intestine. This study, and [51], supports a role for intraepithelial γδ T cells in maintaining the integrity of epithelia through the production of epithelial-specific growth factors and other cytokines.

γδ T cell-induced nitric oxide production enhances resistance to mucosal candidiasis

of outstanding interest. The early immune response to Candida albicans involves overexpression of nitric oxide by macrophages. This study presents evidence that γδ T cells participate in this response by providing soluble or cell-contact-mediated signals for macrophage activation of nitric oxide synthase expression. Animals lacking γδ T cells, as a result of treatment with anti-pan γδ TCR monoclonal antibodies, were deficient in nitric oxide synthase expression in mucosa and had increased susceptibility to candidiasis. This provides one mechanism allowing γδ T cells to indirectly contribute to the innate immune responses against microorganisms.
