    • Pearson A, Lux A, Krieger M: Expression cloning of dSR-CI, a class C macrophage-specific scavenger receptor from Drosophila melanogaster. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1995, 92:4056-4060. This paper and [10] report the first demonstration of SR activity in any non-mammalian species, the cloning of a gene responsible for at least some of this activity, and the characterization of the protein product. The receptor exhibits broad binding specificity, including the ability to bind microbial molecules known to induce an immune response in Drosophila. These findings demonstrate that SR activities and pattern-recognition receptors are indeed evolutionarily ancient.

    • Rigotti A, Acton SL, Krieger M: The class B scavenger receptors SR-BI and CD36 are receptors for anionic phospholipids. J Biol Chem 1995, 270:16221-16224. This paper reports that SR-BI and CD36 recognize anionic phospholipid vesicles, including PS vesicles. These receptors are thus the first, and so far the only, molecularly well defined cell-surface receptors for anionic phospholipids to be described. This important development should contribute greatly to our understanding of SR-B ligand recognition and function in lipid metabolism, in host-defense-related processes and, in particular, in the recognition and engulfment of apoptotic cells.

Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1995, 92:1396-1400. This paper, together with [89•], reports that a PS-binding SR expressed in peritoneal macrophages (elicited and resident) participates in the binding and/or uptake of oxidized red blood cells and apoptotic cells. These papers also provide evidence to suggest the participation of multiple receptors in these processes, which probably include multiple SRs.

    • Identification of scavenger receptor SR-BI as a high density lipoprotein receptor
    • Acton S, Rigotti A, Landschulz KT, Xu S, Hobbs HH, Kreiger M: Identification of scavenger receptor SR-BI as a high density lipoprotein receptor. Science 1996, 271:518-520. This paper reports that SR-BI binds HDL, provides the first demonstration that a CD36 family member can mediate the cellular accumulation of large amounts of lipoprotein-derived cholesterol and lipid, and shows that this process occurs via a mechanism different from the classic endosome/lysosome pathway. The paper also reports that SR-BI is expressed primarily by non-placental steroidogenic tissues and the liver, suggesting exciting possible functions for SR-BI in the mechansims of streoid biosynthesis and reverse cholesterol transport.
