This paper examines the relationship between two enzymes that detoxify the carcinogenic metabolite of aflatoxin and susceptibility to HCC. It presents the risk of HCC in terms of genotyping of these enzymes, serum markers of aflatoxin exposure, and hepatitis B infection.

Review article that summarizes the current understanding of colorectal carcinogenesis, including familial cancer syndromes and the DNA mismatch repair system. It incorporates recent progress in the area into the model proposed by Fearon and Vogelstein (Cell 1990, 61:759-767). The successes in determining events in CRC provide a possible guide for future research into HCC.

    • Terminology of nodular hepatocellular lesions: International Working • Party. Hepatology 1995, 22:983-993. Proposes criteria for nomenclature and histologic diagnosis of nodular hepatic lesions. These guidelines will hopefully be widely used so that there will be consistency in the diagnosis of hepatic lesions. This will facilitate comparison of studies from different regions of the world and ultimately improve our understanding of the sequence and timing of genetic events in hepatic carcinogenesis.
