    • Memory: Old questions, new perspectives
    • Eichenbaum H: Memory: old questions, new perspectives. Curr Biol 1997, 7:R53-R55. An illuminating commentary on two issues in the light of recent molecular genetic evidence. At least some type of short-term memory can be completely independent of long term memory, but it seems that short term memory processes nonetheless can contribute to long term memory formation. Also, from the molecular genetic evidence there are at least two different molecular mechanisms for long term plasticity. This is a possible explanation of the well known finding that animals and humans learn optimally when training sessions are spaced over time, not massed together.

An experimental behavioral study of the differences in performance on word picture matching tasks between patients with degenerative diseases and those with access dysphasia (behaviorally defined as a severe word comprehension deficit, which was inconsistent and which deteriorated with repeat testing; the two cases studied were caused by cerebrovascular accident and tumor). This study suggested that, among other findings, the information processing impairment in degenerative diseases may have somewhat specific characteristics.

    • Separate neural basis of two fundamental memory processes in the human medial temporal lobe
    • Gabrielli JDE, Brewer JB, Desmond JE, Glover GH: Separate neural basis of two fundamental memory processes in the human medial temporal lobe. Science 1997, 276:264-266. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging measures of blood oxygen level, encoding of unfamiliar, complex scenes and line drawings was associated with increased blood flow in a posterior medial temporal region centered on the parahippocampal region. Successful retrieval of previously studied line drawings or words was associated with increased blood flow in an anterior medial temporal region centered on the subiculum. This study helps to show that not only do encoding and retrieval both engage medial temporal structures, but that there are anatomic differences in the structures activated by the different activities. These data also indicate why anterior medial temporal lesions also seem to affect retrieval of previously learned information.

    • Courtney SM, Ungerleider LG, Keil K, Haxby JV: Transient and sustained activity in a distributed neural system for human working memory. Nature 1997, 386:608-611. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to study a visual working memory task, one which required individuals to maintain memories over brief delays. Occipitotemporal areas had mostly transient responses, interpreted as evidence for their role in perceptual processing. Prefrontal areas showed responses that were sustained over the delay intervals, interpreted as evidence for their role in working memory. However, another important finding from this study was that the perceptual/working memory and occipital/prefrontal regional distinctions were not absolute; there were continua of time scales and strengths of involvement.

    • Differentiating the roles of the hippocampal complex and the neocortex in long-term memory storage: Evidence from the study of semantic dementia and Alzheimer's disease
    • Graham K, Hodges J: Differentiating the roles of the hippocampal complex and the neocortex in long-term memory storage: evidence from the study of semantic dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Neuropsychology 1997, 11:77-89. A careful study of autobiographical memory in patients with amnesia (presumably caused by medial temporal degeneration occuring as part of the initial, amnestic form of Alzheimer's disease) and in patients with semantic dementia (presumably caused as temporal neocortical degeneration), including an extensive case study of one patient with semantic dementia. The patients with amnesia had worse memory for more recent autobiographical events: their memory for the most distant autobiographical events was much better (although not necesarily as good as that of controls). In contrast, the patients with semantic dementia had much better memory for the most recent autobiographical events, whereas their memory for the most distant autobiographical events was much worse than that of the amnesties or the controls. In the extensively studied single case, this sparing of autobiographical memories was shown to involve essentially only those acquired in the previous 1.5 years. These data support the notion that the cortical storage of memories is sustained by the medial temporal (hippocampal) system for up to 1.5 years after acquisition; after that time, the medial temporal system is no longer involved. Cortical degeneration will therefore have its greatest effects on memories that are exclusively dependent upon cortical storage, which are the older (more than 1.5 years old) memories.

    • Linguistic ability in early life and cognitive function and Alzheimer's disease in late life
    • Snowdon DA, Kemper SJ, Mortimer JA, Greiner LH, Wekstein DR, Markesbery WR: Linguistic ability in early life and cognitive function and Alzheimer's disease in late life. JAMA 1996, 275:528-532. Higher linguistic ability in early life was associated with a lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. However, the definition of Alzheimer's disease that was used (most notably reaching fixed performance levels on mental status tests) would itself be expected to be influenced by ability and educaton. Even if Alzheimer's disease had exactly the same effects on mental ability, it would be expected that a more accomplished person would take a longer period of decline to reach a fixed endpoint than would a less accomplished person. It remains to be determined whether ability or education actually influence the presentation or presenting characteristics of Alzheimer's disease, or the rate of decline in the condition.

JAMA 1997, 277:800-805. Borderline or very mild dementia was frequently not appreciated by family informants in this sample. Perhaps even more notably, even when mental decline was acknowledged, a large number of families still had not yet brought the individual to medical attention.
