The 'preclinical phase' of probable Alzheimer's disease. A 13 year prospective study of the Framingham cohort

Linn RT, Wolf PA, Bachman DL, Knoefel JE, Cobb JL, Belanger AJ, Kaplan EF, D'Agostino RB: The 'preclinical phase' of probable Alzheimer's disease. A 13 year prospective study of the Framingham cohort. Arch Neurol 1995, 52:485-490. The longitudinal study by these authors followed up 1000 initially non-demented participants over 65 years of age over a 13-year period. Subsequent diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease correlated with initial scores on verbal memory and immediate auditory attention span lending support to the theory that a preclinical phase of Alzheimer's disease may precede clinical diagnosis by many years.

Cognitive test performance in detecting, staging, and tracking Alzheimer's disease
-
Locascio J, Crowdon J, Corkin J: Cognitive test performance in detecting, staging, and tracking Alzheimer's disease. Arch Neurol 1995, 52:1087-1105. The authors of this longitudinal study of 120 Alzheimer's disease patients sought to identify the cognitive deficits that characterise Alzheimer's disease and to determine which cognitive tests best distinguish early Alzheimer's disease from controls and which tests are the best for subsequent staging. Clinicopathological correlates of different cognitive modules affected in Alzheimer's disease are discussed.

Is semantic memory consistently impaired early in the course of Alzheimer's disease: Neuroanatomical and diagnostic implications
-
Hodges JR, Patterson K: Is semantic memory consistently impaired early in the course of Alzheimer's disease: neuroanatomical and diagnostic implications. Neuropsychologia 1995, 33:441-459. Episodic and semantic memory was tested in 52 Alzheimer's disease patients who were subdivided into minimal, mild and moderate subgroups of Alzheimer's disease by Mini Mental State Examination scores. Episodic memory was profoundly affected in all patients, but although the progressive disruption of semantic memory characteristic of Alzheimer's disease could be detected at a very early stage, this was not a universal finding. The neural substrates of episodic and semantic memory are discussed.

Comparison of the semantic networks in patients with dementia and amnesia
-
Chan AS, Butters N, Salmon DP, Johnson SA, Paulsen JS, Swensen MR: Comparison of the semantic networks in patients with dementia and amnesia. Neuropsychology 1995, 9:177-186. Using multidimensional scaling techniques and Pathfinder analysis, the semantic networks of Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease and amnesic patients were generated and compared. Whilst the semantic networks of Huntington's disease and amnesic patients were intact, the authors suggested structural alteration of the networks in Alzheimer's disease patients. The storage versus retrieval debate regarding semantic memory loss in Alzheimer's disease is discussed.

Autobiographical memory and executive function in early dementia of Alzheimer type
-
Greene JDW, Hodges JR, Baddeley A: Autobiographical memory and executive function in early dementia of Alzheimer type. Neuropsychologia 1995, 33:1647-1670. The authors ask whether autobiographical memory is consistently impaired early in the course of Alzheimer's disease and if there is a temporal gradient. They also examine the functioning of the CES and whether it has a role in the retrieval of autobiographical memories.
