Carbon-carbon bond scission (Formula presented) and formation of a (Formula presented) phase where (Formula presented) fragments bond two close neighbor surface silicon atoms have been envisaged by Craig and Smith [B. I. Craig and P. V. Smith, Surf. Sci. 276, 174 (1992).

Surf. Sci.B. I. CraigP. V. Smith285, 295 (1993)]. Their total-energy calculation (MINDO calculation in a slab geometry) shows that the (Formula presented) phase (di-σ adsorption on uncleaved Si dimers) is still 0.328 eV above the energetically preferred (Formula presented) If the energy barrier between those two phases is large, the attachment of (Formula presented) fragments should be a minor pathway at room temperature.

A metastable site for a displaced AD could be an interstitialcy site: from its (Formula presented) site, the AD moves down, below the plane of its three PA’s, towards the underlying Si atom of the second layer, in order to form a 〈111〉 split interstitial or a bond-centered interstitial. Self-interstitials in diamondlike lattices have been proposed first by Watkins et al. [G. D. Watkins, R. P. Messmer, C. Weigel, D. Peak, and J. W. Corbett, Phys. Rev. Lett. 27, 1573 (1971)].

See R. S. Becker, J. A. Golovchenko, G. S. Higashi, and B. S. Schwartzentruber, Phys. Rev. Lett. 57, 1020 (1986). In the (Formula presented) structure, the number of adatoms equals that of rest atoms (two per cell): in the framework of a charge-transfer mechanism, adatom dangling bonds are empty and rest-atom dangling bonds are fully occupied.
