We note that the STM images in Refs. 7 and 8 were obtained at negative sample bias. On the other hand, since Zn is the electropositive element, the dangling bonds of Zn on GaAs(001)-(2×4) are expected to be empty. This might be another reason why the Zn atoms were not imaged by STM.
