    • note
    • I use the term interest group somewhat differently than others working in this scholarly field. The reason is that many of the theoretical perspectives I use in this article are derived from the literature on interest group politics. Here, an interest group refers to the set of (1) organizations that (2) seek political influence, yet (3) have no interest in gaining executive or legislative power themselves. This includes business groups, social movements, labor unions, etc. See Jan Beyers, Rainer Eising, and William Maloney, "Researching Interest Group Politics in Europe and Elsewhere: Much We Study, Little We Know?"
