Our basis in which we write the matrix of the Hamiltonian in Eq. (2) comprises direct products of the J z eigenstates and envelope functions sin (n x π x / L 0) sin (n y π y / L 0) sin (n z π z / L 0). The unperturbed S -like wave function corresponds to n x = n y = n z = 1. Throughout the paper L 0 = L, except for Fig. 3(b) with well-in-well structure, where a smaller QD (L × L × L) structure is confined by finite potential V 0 in a larger infinite potential well (L 0 × L 0 × L 0) with L 0 = 2 L

Simple k·p models can provide a good descriptions of QD experiments (Ref. [3]). The occurrence of nodal ground states is not limited to the six-band k·p model. With the lowest conduction bands included, the eight-band k · p model predicts nodal ground state in quantum wires. G. M. Sipahi (private communication).

Figure 2 of Ref. [44] also shows that for suitable values of γ ̃ 2 / γ 1, the P -like state may be energetically favorable to the common nodeless ground state (S -like state). Note that numerical results of Ref. [44] are slightly different from the results obtained using the six-band model in the Δ SO → ∞ limit due to an erroneous sign in some matrix elements of Eq. (2) in Ref. [44]

Note that the S -like manifold is precisely {(11) x, (11) y} only at V s p = 0. At finite V s p, the two wave functions acquire admixtures from other states defined by Eq. (8) but they remain degenerate. This degeneracy is due to the 90 â̂̃ -rotation symmetry
