2O*). In martian settings, attempts at making corrections for chemical constituents have commonly proven nonunique because mineralogical determinations are either incomplete or do not exist and nonsilicate mineralogy is both uncertain and complex, involving a variety of Ca, Mg, and Fe sulfates, chlorides, perchlorates, and in some cases carbonates. Accordingly, bulk analyses are used in formulating these diagrams and in calculating the CIA values, and the possibility of nonsilicate phases must be considered when making interpretations.
