    • Note, superparamagnetism is observed when the crystal size is reduced below the typical domain size of the bulk material resulting in single-domain crystals, in which all electron spins point in the same direction. In sufficiently small particles, the orientation of the magnetization can flip randomly in direction as a result of thermal agitation, leading to a time-averaged magnetization of zero. In the presence of a small external magnetic field, however, all electrons align in the direction of the field leading to a large net magnetization.
