This is a very thoughtful review of the literature describing caffeine's effects in children, and the substantial unknowns faced as we evaluate pediatric energy drink exposures. Caffeine's potential effects on taste preference, obesity, and reinforcing behavior are mentioned. Additionally, Dr Temple highlights many of the methodologic shortcomings in studies that demonstrate the 'desired effects' of caffeinated beverages.

Researchers noted increased stimulation after AMED use, which may increase the reward of drinking alcohol.

In this study of college students, those individuals who used energy drinks had higher levels of sensation seeking, alcohol and other drug use.
