    • The Hubbard U parameter is the difference between consecutive ionization potentials, such as E(-/0) - E(0/+). Most commonly this is a positive value as the tendancy to add further electrons to a system increases as the chemical potential of the electrons increases in energy. A negative-U system is typically associated with systems which undergo a significant geometric relaxation with change in charge state, such a interstitial hydrogen in many materials
