    • The parameter τ is the index of the degree of trigonality within the structural continuum between square-pyramidal and trigonal bipyramidal geometries. If A is the apical donor atom of a square-based pyramid then it should not be among the atoms which define the largest two angles at the metal center. Donor atoms B and C are associated with the greater basal angle, b, and atoms D and E with the smaller basal angle, a; τ = (b - a)/60 and is therefore 0 for a square pyramid and 1 for a trigonal bipyramid
