The third edition of VIM (ISO/IEC Report 99, 2007) has been developed to encompass "... the various types and uses of measurements" including "simple" cases see March The definition of traceability has changed to "metrological traceability: property of a measurement result whereby the result can be related to a reference through a documented unbroken chain of calibrations, each contributing to the measurement uncertainty". The VIM 2 definition is a sub-set of VIM3, is clearer and is more appropriate for optical surface form metrology
