    • Note the large increase of the non-Gaussian parameter upon approaching the melting temperature in Jin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett., 2001, 87, 055703]. The average string length L normally tracks the growth of the non-Gaussian parameter, suggesting the growth of the string length near the nanoparticle melting temperature in the inset of Fig. 3 is due to string formation from within the nanoparticle that drives the ultimate melting of the nanoparticle.
