Appetite control and energy •• balance regulation in the modern world: Reward-driven brain overrides repletion signals
-
This review paper argues that the inherent asymmetry in the adaptive response to famine and feast may be responsible for the fact that simply changing the food environment can push adiposity of a population upward and result in the increased prevalence of obesity. This article also highlights that we need to gain better insight into how the brain deals with environmental stimuli and to develop behavioral strategies to better cope with them

Ten putative contributors to the • obesity epidemic

This review paper discusses that there are multiple plausible causes of obesity outside of physical inactivity and unhealthy diet. Risk factors for adult overweight and • obesity in the Quebec family study: Have we been barking up the wrong tree?

This article shows that adults who sleep fewer hours, consume less dietary calcium, and present a high disinhibition eating behavior are more likely to be overweight or obese. Acute partial sleep deprivation •• increases food intake in healthy men

This article shows that one night of reduced sleep subsequently increases food intake. This study provides for the first time evidence that sleeping less than usual for only one night increases food intake. These experimental results, if confirmed by long-term energy balance measurements, suggest that sleep restriction could be a factor that promotes obesity

Sleep duration as a risk factor for • the development of type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance: Analyses of the Quebec family study
-
This article shows that short and long sleeping times are associated with a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance, independent of several covariates. These results suggest that sleep duration may represent a novel risk factor for type 2 diabetes

Sleep duration and mortality: A systematic review and • meta-analysis

Effects of poor and short sleep on •• glucose metabolism and obesity risk
-
This review paper summarizes the laboratory and epidemiologic evidence that suggests how sleep loss, either behavioral or disease-related, and poor quality of sleep might promote the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes, and exacerbate existing endocrine conditions. The authors address the fact that treatment of sleep disorders has the potential to improve glucose metabolism and energy balance

Short-term sleep loss • decreases physical activity under free-living conditions but does not increase food intake under time-deprived laboratory conditions in healthy men

This article experimentally shows that short-term sleep restriction reduces daytime overall spontaneous physical activity and shifts the intensity of physical activity toward lower levels under free-living conditions. The observed decrease in physical activity points to another potentially important behavioral mechanism for the healthimpairing influence of short sleep duration

Role of sleep and sleep loss in hormonal release and •• metabolism
-
This article reviews epidemiologic studies in adults and children and laboratory studies in young adults indicating that sleep restriction results in metabolic and endocrine alterations, including decreased glucose tolerance, decreased insulin sensitivity, increased evening concentrations of cortisol, increased levels of ghrelin, decreased levels of leptin, and increased hunger and appetite. This paper suggests that avoiding sleep deprivation may help to prevent the development of obesity, particularly in children
