When various aryl-substituted alkynes such as phenylacetylene and 4-methoxy or 4-N-dimethylaminophenylacetylene were subjected to the standard conditions, several by-products were detected, including trimeric adducts. The desired dimers were observed as very minor products. The dimerization of other simple alkynes such as hexyne did not lead to a clean reaction
