    • In Fig. 8A (F1 containing monomeric coumarin groups), the region irradiated with visible light (>310 nm) becomes non-fluorescent because of selective photodimerization whereas the unirradiated region remains fluorescent. In contrast, in Fig. 8B (F2 containing dimeric coumarin groups), the region irradiated with UV (∼245 nm) recovers the fluorescence and the unirradiated region remains non-fluorescent. The contrast between fluorescent and non-fluorescent areas of Fig. 8B is lower than that of Fig. 8A, because the photocleavage of coumarin groups in F2 only partially occurs, as shown in Fig. 9. Black spots observed in Fig. 8A and Fig. 8B are probably contaminants and/or defects of the films
