    • According to IUPAC nomenclature, abnormal carbenes belong to the class of mesoionic compounds, and the complexes should hence be termed mesoionic complexes rather than carbene complexes. The term mesoionic is formally more appropriate than abnormal or remote carbene, yet it omits the genealogically relationship to normal NHCs and Fischer carbenes. Based on the data currently available, all these classes of carbene complexes should be described as mesoionic complexes
