FASEB J (2004) 18(12):1450-1452. • Diabetic mice deficient in the genes coding for the leukocyte adhesion molecule ICAM-1 and the integrin ligand CD-18 demonstrated a significant reduction in leukostasis, leakage and damaged endothelial cells in the retinal vasculature at 11 and 15 months. These data highlighted the central role of leukocytes in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. (Pubitemid 39561611)

Extracellular carbonic anhydrase mediates hemorrhagic retinal and cerebral vascular permeability through prekallikrein activation
-
•• Extracellular CA-1 and prekallikrein levels were increased in the vitreous of patients with diabetic retinopathy. In diabetic rats, CA-1-induced increases in retinal vascular leakage were mediated by activation of the KKS. This report suggests that inhibition of CA-1 and kallikrein provide a therapeutic opportunity for the treatment of hemorrhagic retinal edema
