    • The method of introduction of the thiol group also had a profound influence on the reusability of the catalyst. Supports prepared by introduction of the thiol AFTER formation of the support had considerably longer lifetimes, presumably due to the protective effect that coating the surface with an organic layer provided. Materials prepared by co-condensation (such as are described herein), were catalytically active for only 1-2 runs in the case of SBA-15.
