Since a photon substitutes but is not a chemical reagent this can not be accounted for in the atom economy of the process. On the other hand, since most of the photochemical reactions have a quantum yield not exceeding 0.1, the "photon economy" of the process is in most cases unsatisfactory. Recently Liu and coworkers introduced the RESR value to determine the relative efficiency of a solar reaction, see ref. 64b
