    • Note added in proof: after submission of the revised version of the present manuscript, a paper by Krohn et al. was published, in which the partial synthesis of xanthepinone by chemical oxidation of microsphaeropsone A is reported. The authors determined the absolute configuration of levorotatory xanthepinone to be (R) by comparison of simulated and measured solid state CD spectra of microsphaeropsone A using the solid state CD/TDDFT method.
