    • 4 to the reaction, the colour of the reaction mixture changed specifically. For instance, in the reactions catalyzed by 3a, 3b and 3c, the colour of the reaction mixture changed to reddish brown, dark green and brown, respectively. However, in the reduction using 3f in methanol, the colour changed slightly to yellowish green and most of 3f remained insoluble, showing only trace amounts of [Co(i)Pc] intermediate formation in the reaction. The poor catalytic activity of 3f in methanol could be attributed to its strong self-aggregation tendency in polar solvent, which prevent its reduction to the [Co(i)Pc] intermediate. This is in accordance with the propensity of various functionalized phthalocyanines to form self-aggregates in the solution phase. For details see:
