Screening for cryptococcal antigenemia in patients accessing an antiretroviral treatment program in South Africa
-
Demonstrates potential utility of screening for cryptococcal serum antigenemia for AIDS patients from South Africa with CD4 cell counts < 100/μl. Seven per cent of stored serum from an antiretroviral therapy study were found to be antigen positive. Antigenemia was 100% sensitive for predicting development of cryptococcal meningitis during the first year of therapy, and in multivariate analysis, it was an independent predictor of mortality.
