Ocular anti-allergic compounds selectively inhibit human mast cell cytokines in vitro and conjunctival cell infiltration in vivo

Galatowicz G, Ajayi Y, Stern ME, Calder VL. Ocular antiallergic compounds selectively inhibit human mast cell cytokines in vitro and conjunctival cell infiltration in vivo. Clin Exp Allergy 2007; 37:1648-1656. The authors of this article provide a well documented comparative study of the effects played by azelastine, olopatadine and epinastine in mediating both early and late-phase mast cell reactions. Particularly, human cord blood stem cell-derived and conjunctival biopsy-derived mast cells were induced to release histamine and to synthesize cytokines. All drugs significantly reduced histamine and TNF-a production/release, whereas IL5, IL8, IL10 and TNF-b were differentially decreased. (Pubitemid 47609843)
