    • The described method provides a quantitative means to analyze the kinetics of both the photoinduced hydrophilic conversion process and the reverse process to the hydrophobic state during long-term storage in the dark. The method requires the data for the reverse processes in the dark. In the present study, we only focused on the hydrophilic conversion, so we did not observe the reverse process. However, investigations focusing on the reverse process in the dark are now underway and will be reported elsewhere

    • In the case of the present cis-9-octadecenoic acid decomposition, because it can be assumed that the amounts of adsorbed organic substances remained effectively constant during the initial stage, the activities of these films mainly reflected the amounts of photogenerated carriers on the surface. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that these films had approximately the same numbers of photogenerated holes at the surfaces under UV light irradiation

    • The positive value of the δVqfor the photoinduced hydrophilic conversion is also consistent with our recent work (ref 51); that is, the hydrophilic conversion involves a volume expansion in the near surface region
