A copper-catalyzed multi-component coupling of salicylaldehydes, amines, and alkynes to dihydrobenzofurans has been reported. However, the alkynes employed were limited to those aliphatic alkynes bearing a heteroatom, such as propargyl alcohols or propargyl amines, and in most cases, only dihydrobenzofurans were obtained.
