Cree MG, Zwetsloot JJ, Hemdon DN, et al. Insulin sensitivity and mitochondrial function are improved in children with burn injury during a randomized controlled trial of fenofibrate. Ann Surg 2007; 245:214-221. This paper shows the beneficial effects of a drug used to improve insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes mellitus and critically ill burned children. This could confirm the hypothesis that insulin resistance in critically ill patients share the same underlying mechanisms of insulin resistance seen in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Incidence and prognosis of early hepatic dysfunction in critically ill patients: a prospective multicenter study. Crit Care Med 2007 2007; 35:1099-1104. This study demonstrates that liver dysfunction assessed by changes in plasmatic bilirrubin appears early during the critically illness, and more importantly it correlates with the prognosis. Using these criteria, liver dysfunction in critically ill patients is more frequent than expected in previous studies.
