Dimers of the N-terminal domain of phytochrome B are functional in the nucleus
-
T. Matsushita, N. Mochizuki, and A. Nagatani Dimers of the N-terminal domain of phytochrome B are functional in the nucleus Nature 424 2003 571 574 This paper reports a surprising finding that the carboxy-terminal half of phyB is dispensable for the signal transduction of phyB. The authors demonstrated that the amino-terminal domain of phyB fused to GFP, GUS and NLS acted as a hypersensitive photoreceptor. The work forces us to rebuild our view of the mechanism for phytochrome signal transduction.

Nuclear translocation of the photoreceptor phytochrome B is necessary for its biological function in seedling photomorphogenesis
-
E. Huq, B. Al-Sady, and P.H. Quail Nuclear translocation of the photoreceptor phytochrome B is necessary for its biological function in seedling photomorphogenesis Plant J 35 2003 660 664 This work provides firm evidence that phyB transduces the signal in the nucleus but not in the cytoplasm. The authors expressed phyB with the glucocorticoid receptor as a fusion protein. This protein was biologically active only when the plants were treated with glucocorticoid, which allowed the protein to be imported into the nucleus.
